So the campaign actually launched, and its been very fun. We finished the back half of session 0 with the start of a little dungeon crawl. So that is where we began session 1.
The party was hired to investigate undead crawling around a dwarven family crypt. When they got there they found recently dug out side tunnels, undead aplenty (some dwarven sized, some human sized and one ogre sized)! When they cleared it all out and investigated everything, they found a false bottom in the most ornate stone coffin which led down 60 ft to a dark and ancient and eerie dungeon beneath.
They went back to town, talked to the NPC who gave them this quest who had no idea any of that was there and was eternally grateful for their service. They walked around town, gathered a few rumors
- The town is offering 500 gp to take back a fort on the river bank to the south from some bandits.
- Goblins are currently occupying an ancient ruined castle that the town would love to have as a station of defense.
- The town to the south, Brandonsford, is being harassed by a dragon and the mayor is offering 1000 gp for it's head.
After resting and leveling up to level 2, they went back into the dungeon to continue their exploration where they found remnants of a creepy cult who worships "The Eternal Night". They found demonic books and paintings with looming shadowy figures in the back behind otherwise normal family portraits.
We ended the session as they entered a room in the dungeon with a Wight like creature battle ready and a looming shadowy figure standing above.
Its been nice to play a more heroic, less stressful game after a year and a half of OSR games. I know I'll go back to Swords and Wizardry one day, but it's pretty refreshing to pick out cool monsters and have set piece battles.
